History

The Western Forest Complex is not a homogenous area administered by one entity (notwithstanding the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, that controls all the protected areas in Thailand). It is a diverse territory that has been forming over a period of more than four decades with each of its national parks and wildlife sanctuaries having an own management and strategy.

Proclaimed in 1965 the Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary was the first protected area in the region. 18 other national parks and wildlife sanctuaries followed until today.

For more detailed information on history of the Western Forest Complex see the protected areas pages.
